Absinthe the green goddess is back!

Absinthe drink, also nicknamed as the green goddess or the green fairy, is an alcoholic drink. It is made mainly from the wormwood plant. The French doctor Pierre Ordinaire first invented it in 1797 for his patients as a remedy for many diseases like antiseptic, fevers, jaundice and the list is endless. He prepared it by mixing the wormwood extract with anise, hyssop, fennel and various other herbs and alcohol as a base. Henri Louis Pernod rediscovered this natural drink. Who got this recipe and improved its quality in a special distillery in Switzerland in the early 80s.

Soon this unique drink, which is sapphire, green in color became the pet of the upper class people and was drunk ceremoniously. This preparation is done with a special absinthe spoon and chilled water and a sugar cube. This delicately balanced drink has a bitter taste due to the presence of the key ingredient that is absinthe and it is similar in taste like the raki of Turkish drink or the ouzo, the traditional Greek drink even that of arak, the Lebanese drink. It also has a mint like taste and one has to develop a taste for it, but once developed the connoisseur usually prefers this absinthe drink to any other as it has many good qualities. Because of its popularity it was available everywhere and easy to buy absinthe.

Absinthe liquor is actually a medicinal drink and was consumed throughout the world starting from Switzerland and spreading all over the world. However, it was banned in the late 80s as people unjustly blamed this drink saying it makes a person lose his goodness and commits a crime. They also said that it makes a person lazy and makes one ill but the final straw was the murder case of the Lanfray in 1905, when Jean Lanfray murdered his family and also tried to kill himself in an intoxicated state of mind. This high profile murder case made people uneasy and they filed a petition to ban this drink but the fact remained that Lanfray was intoxicated with many other branded drinks as he was an alcoholic and had taken only two glasses of absinthe only on top of many other drinks. This fact was not publicized. So this unique drink was banned till its resurgence of later years, and it became hard for everyone to find and buy absinthe.
