An encounter with Absinthe

Monday, December 24th, 2007

An encounter with Absinthe, an alcoholic drink, made me aware that the age old saying old is gold is true. Absinthe alcoholic drink gave me my pride back recently. One of my nephews argued about drinks in general and I got involved by saying that I loved to drink absinthe long back when it wasn’t banned, to which he taunted it is back but is not that good for I have read all about it. This made me indignant and we had a hot discussion which was going bad for me when suddenly, an idea got into my head and I asked him to tell me why it is bad. He gave me a long list of ridiculous things as his excuse, while I waited for him to finish. The moment he finished I challenged him to buy absinthe, a full bottle and to taste it for us and see its reactions, to have firsthand proof. Now he was stumped and we ordered a bottle online.

Our online absinthe drink arrived promptly, within a week. I announced that one of his arguments failed for our order was fulfilled within such a short time. Next he was hesitant to drink it but not I; I proceeded to pour my own drink from an absinthe glass, which had arrived along with our bottle as per our request. Looking at me while I was sipping my glass of blissful absinthe alcohol, he asked nervously, if its really harmless, laughing at his stupidity I replied even if I died suddenly in front of him for any cause, my will (which I produced from my coat pocket and waved at him) makes him the sole beneficiary, so he need not worry.

My confident attitude made him ashamed for his stupidity and he joined me in having his first absinthe drink.

Soon our friendly ritual began where we drank absinthe king regularly, while talking about it, mainly, me reciting age-old history of this special drink and he absorbed it as if soaking it in a blotting paper. I told him how absinthe was in its prime all over the country and how due to some misunderstandings, it was banned but not in every country though and how some people visited countries where it was not banned and bought their own bottles and now that it was back everywhere, people like me will keep it fresh by teaching youngsters like him to learn to respect elders choices for absinthe is not only an alcoholic drink but also has a positive effect and has healing qualities which is more than any other drinks. I realized old is really gold, may it be wine, advises or even persons like me! Who give good valuable advise to younger generations like my nephew.

About Absinthe

Since childhood, we have been hearing about a drink called Absinthe, even read about it a lot. Our curiosity could not be fulfilled as it was banned but our peers regaled about the Green Goddess as they called Absinthe alcohol and we felt it was something like mythology.

Recently, we found out that it is in the market, available for all! Once again there will be poets and painters, great writers and intellectuals like the legendary Oscar wilde, Vincent Van Gogh, Mark Twain, Baudelaire, Monet, Verlaine, Pablo Picasso and many others; drinking Absinthe liquor and writing or painting about them too, for the above said personalities favored this bitter-sweet tasting aphrodisiac drink, lovingly called the green fairy or the green goddess.

There are absinthe kits available for those who wish to try it at home, but it is a skill which few people have mastered, better to purchase a bottle at the shop or order online absinthe than risk having a brew not fit for consumption. This much controversial absinthe green liquor was banned as there was a hue and cry about it, saying it distorted the absinthe drinkers mind which is untrue, absinthe has been used as a medicinal drink long back when it cured abdominal pains, during menstrual periods and helped cure jaundice, acted as antiseptic and was in great demand at that time. It is said that a doctor, Henri Louis started a distillery, for the sole purpose for curing his patients, in Switzerland. Later, it spread like a jungle fire and people of every country, every race, rich or poor, longed for it and made it a ritual drink during cocktails.

Absinthe was prepared in a ceremonial, ritualistic way, while an absinthe spoon (of either brass or steel made, with inbuilt holes for water to drop) was held over an absinthe glass, having a broad base, for measurement, with a sugar cube on top of the absinthe spoon, while chilled water was gently poured over the sugar cube, melting it unto the bitter liquid of absinthe, forming a cloudy like forming in the glass. It is then drunk. However, we need not bother about such delicate preparation in our hectic days but can purchase a bottle of absinthe liquor anywhere, anytime, as it is back in the market for all.

Try its different varieties by ordering online or purchase a bottle to send, as a gift to your loved ones, for it has been proven that absinthe is NOT harmful. Now it is our own Absinthe world and we can sample it almost anywhere in the world. We can enjoy this luxury sitting at home besides our loved ones, this Christmas. This age-old absinthe, bittersweet, queen rules over our world today.

Even in the US it is not banned to drink absinthe nor possess a bottle of green absinthe but is banned from selling it.
